Since I spent several years in grad school researching ancient manuscripts, I understand why I liked this book.

What I don't understand is why anyone else would. But whatever. It's a NY Times bestseller, so maybe a lot more people did the ancient-manuscripts-in-grad-school thing than I realized.

Before I started giving book reports here

I gave a few dozen elsewhere.

Since my brain has been kinda empty and my book reading seriously slowed, I thought I'd take a link.

This book suffers from the "latest book in a successful trilogy" syndrome.

You know. The one I talked about here.

It was good. But it would have been better if the publishers remembered that the only thing separating them from the self-publishing houses is the FILTERING and EDITING they provide. Meaning: don't rush and under-edit a good author just because you want to make $$ faster. You're just undermining your own business value that way, people.

(and yes, I realize the irony of me saying this after my very last post was all about not being able to wait. but I would have waited for something better. I'm not *completely* a child.)

I really liked the first three books in this series

Which is why St. Martin's made the Casts write a gajillion new books for the series and only gave them twelve minutes time to do it.

When I grow up, one of my nightmareish writing scenarios will mirror the situation of this book. i.e. I'll write a kick-a trilogy. It'll sell like crazy. The publisher will push me to write moreandmoreandmoreandmore in lessandlessandless time. So my books will be under-edited, rushed, and, ultimately, just like this book. And my readers will be sad. And when sales fall the publishers will blame me.

But at least when my sales crash down into the crapper and I'm cut off by the publisher, I'll have time to write properly again, right? Under a new pseudonym, though. Pesky BookScan.

Why haven't I posted book reports in awhile?

it's not because I haven't been reading. it's because I didn't want to review this book. OMG someone catch me I'm about to keel.

I expected this book to make me all rage-y and angst-y like most feminist books do

But instead what happened is that it totally explained all the reasons my husband and I fight... all the things that have made our life since having kids so... *hard.* And then I didn't have to be mad at my husband anymore and I didn't have to be mad at myself anymore and it was just such a... *relief.* God bless you Joan Williams.

I think these books all have the same plot

girl meets boy. girl is stunned by boy's beauty and, yanno, his superpowers. prickly and problematic romance ensues.

so what does it say about me if I thoroughly enjoyed all of them?
